Spirit Poured Out

When the Spirit Moves

Pentecost, Year B

Pentecost worship is about joy, and the invitation is to let the Spirit be poured out on you. But remember, that “you” is plural. Let the Spirit be poured out on all y’all. It was because they were gathered together that this happened.

This series of children’s messages will revolve around the theme of the planning, preparation, and celebration of a child’s understanding of a “birthday party.” The objects used are simple things that would be considered important elements needed for the party. If your congregation is still worshiping virtually, you can still use the objects as you describe them.

Acts 2: 1-4 (NIRV)

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

2When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers gathered in one place. 2Suddenly a sound came from heaven. It was like a strong wind blowing. It filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw something that looked like fire in the shape of tongues. The flames separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they had not known before. The Spirit gave them the ability to do this.

Powerful suggestion: Have someone recite the message in a different language. A Spanish translation of this message has been provided, but if you have someone fluent in another language, feel free to include that translation. Have the translation offered line by line, so that children will begin to make the connection of how the words sound when translated.

Object: A big “Happy Birthday” banner. Have the banner translated into the second language used.

Message: How do you celebrate your birthday? Do you have a big party with your family and friends? Do you have presents and games? What about a cake? Do you like cupcakes or a big cake with all the candles on it? (Let children respond, while building excitement in planning the party.) A birthday party celebrates that you are another year older. You also celebrate the day when you were first born.

Today is Pentecost. Pentecost is like a birthday party for the church. We celebrate Pentecost Sunday each year because this is the day the church was born. The church was born by the power of the Holy Spirit. It happened in Jerusalem, and there was a very big party!

When you have a birthday party, you most likely invite friends your own age. These friends probably speak the same language as you. At Pentecost, God’s Spirit was poured out on people of all ages and from every country. They all spoke different languages. Why is it so important to celebrate the church’s birthday? Would you like to be part of the birthday party for the church? (Let children respond, while building excitement.) This means when the church has a birthday party, EVERYONE is invited!

Prayer: God, thank you for the birthday of the church. Thank you that the church has a place for me at the party. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Message translated into Spanish by Alma Perez

Hechos 2:1-4 (NVI)
